ABOUT Gordon D Smith

Gordon D Smith is a Vancouver Island artist working in charcoal, graphite, pastel, oil and acrylic. He has a background in graphic design, life drawing, figurative painting, and computer graphics.
Gord studied fine art and graphic design at Douglas College and graduated with an Associate in Graphic and Communication Arts diploma. He applied his visual communication skills to private business and government, retiring in 2018 from the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure as manager of the ministry's web site and BC Highwaycam program. Gord is currently an Exhibiting Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) Victoria Chapter. His work has appeared in the Sidney and Sooke Fine Arts Shows and has garnered awards in FCA juried Exhibitions. While he explores various subject matter, he prefers to classify his artwork as "genre” painting — portraying people involved in work or regular day-to-day activities. Themes Gord’s inspiration comes from observing everyday work and relaxation activities that often go unnoticed as we speed through life. Abstracting scenes we see from our car windows or during a walk invests them an iconic quality, prompting us to reflect on them in a deeper way. Gord’s own work background helps him understand and admire what working people do to build and maintain the structures we rely on daily. Isolating these moments allows us to reflect on how work and play connects us to our environment. |
